Vicious by V. E Schwab – Book Review

Title: Vicious

Author: V. E Schwab

Genre: Fantasy, Teenage Fiction, YA

Rating: 4.5/5

When I first got sent This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab, I knew that this was an author I would read more from. Her novels are gritty, dark and full of mid-level fantasy that’s pretty easy to digest and enjoy.

So when recently, I picked up her cult classic novel of Vicious, it’s safe to say I knew I would enjoy it without even reading the blurb or guessing what it was about.

Primarily set around two brilliant University (college) level friends, Eli and Vincent, this novel deals with death, the afterlife, superhuman abilities and religious overtones that make pulls this narrative along in a fast-paced way.

Eli and Vincent are two highly intelligent, yet bored college roommates who discover that near-death experiences (under the right experiences) can produce and release extraordinary abilities.

However, after both the freshmen decide to release their own abilities, a tragedy divides them apart and makes them into enemies of each other. The novel then turns into a revenge narrative – with both men wanting to kill the other as payback to their various crimes.81JT8l2hF9L.jpg

Primarily shown through flashbacks, this novel quickly sets the scene of these two brilliant boys and shows how jealously and intelligence eats away at both of them in different ways. Whilst Vincent becomes a brooding anti-hero of the novel, Eli turns into a sort of religious zealot/megalomanic that needs to be stopped.

The story moves at a fast pace, and the supporting characters that get introduced don’t feel weak against the two protagonists, but instead show off how crucial they are to the story.

I read the book in just under two days, and it’s safe to say, I was sucked until the very last page. A very refreshing take on the superhero genre, and one that I’ll happily read time and time again.

Stay tuned for my review on 2018’s sequel Vengeful – coming soon!
